Market Place 34 Banks Court through the archway to the right of Banks shop and museum. Please go in Banks shop and visit the museum at the end (donations welcome). To the right of Banks shop is the archway that leads to Banks Court which is this photo in about 1960. These have been tastefully modernised. The lane continues to the old Brewery. On the left of the lane were the workshops for the people who lived in the houses on the right. Notice at the end of the lane are stone stairs when interior stairs used up a lot of living space inside the house. (In living memory, Lanefoot had a ladder to upstairs) Please visit Banks and this lane and Cocktons Yard to realise how Cockermouth was in times gone past. c 1960

Market Place 34 Banks Court entrance from Market Place Through the passage by Banks Ironmongers at the end of Market Place is one of the most interesting yards in the town. It was originally a medieval burgage plot, the long garden at the rear of a Norman dwelling on Market Place, that led down to outbuildings such as stables on the back lane. In around 1790 during the Industrial Revolution, the owners of the town house built a factory down one side and workers’ cottages on the other side. Linen was manufactured here until the process was moved to larger premises in around 1830. This is the only mill development of this kind remaining in Cockermouth, now being residential along with a studio and bookstore. Banks Shop building is already Grade II listed. c 2000
