Market Place 12 Skeltons Stores Grocer and Provision Dealer. This photo was in an advert in a theatre programme and shows the location clearly of 12 Market Place with the three storey protrusion into the street, and the single storey sloped roof extension into the street that in this photo is a shop display but in later photos is shown as the front room of Mr Dobinson’s private house, but the extension was later removed.
Mr Skelton is standing at the entrance to his warehouse where above him and below the roof is the beam of a hoist that would take the large bags of flour to the upper store room, seen here with bags. [Eric remembers doing this hoisting at Sibson Bros warehouse in Nook Street/Ritson Street in Workington].
Note that the flour is Carrs flour from Carrs mill at Silloth, (having moved from Maryport because the coal dust affected the quality).
These premises have ben substantially altered and at one time, Google maps shows Westlakes Recruit in the left side.
It seems that the centre warehouse doors have been replaced with windows and the frontage has been rendered and painted to show little sign of the history shown in this photo.

Market Place 24 Cockermouth first bank. Cockermouth’s first bank was probably Joseph Sanderson’s Cockermouth Old Bank of the 1820s, sold to the Carlisle City and District Bank in 1837. This was in Bank House on the north side of Market Place and later the premises were used as a grocer’s shop, here Wilson Bros, and the building has had many uses since. c 1920
Market Place Luchinis ices with early cars converted to sell ices. Although the surname is the same as the Luchini on Main Street by Kings Arms Lane (now Cusack) this is a different branch of the family. This was run by Sadie Luchini the sister in law of Ralph Luchini who had the Main Street shop and ice cream manufacturing in Kings Arms Lane. c 1920 p2
On the left is the grandfather of the present owner of Luchinis.
To the right of the rear vehicle is Market Street in its original location. The building behind the people and the buildings further left were all demolished and replaced with a new building and the Market Street became pedestrianised and a new vehicle entrance was made to the new car park behind. c 1920
