Main Street 64 Croasdell Chemist can just be seen behind Mayo who is overlooking a child with wide brimmed hat as horse drawn cart approaches from behind. Photo dated June 28th 1902. In 1940 the railings were taken down for WW2. 1902
Main Street 60 Kings Arms Lane behind a parade of Sangers Elephants Circus. The 3 storey building on the right was Lothian and Straughton later demolished for Boots the Chemist c 1900
Main Street 64 Robinson Mayo Furnishing Warehouse. Note the hand operated cast iron device that looks like a clothes mangle that squeezed water from clothing after it was washed in the washing tub, but it may have been another machine. c 1900

Main Street 68 Cockton County Boot & Shoe Warehouse is now PFK Estate Agent. 70 G W Jenkinson Ironmonger, now Bryson. Between todays PFK and Brysons and is the public entrance to Cocktons Yard, a showpiece of terraced housing, an award winning renovation and preservation masterpiece. please go through the door and to the end of the yard then left under the arch and then on to Waterloo Street.
The shop to the left of Jenkinson is Wilson Mounsey who was responsible for many of these photos and the wooden doors that once led to the stables later led to Aspava Turkish restaurant which recently moved to Main Street. Wilson Mounsey is now the Toy Shop and the front has been sensitively preserved with the original tiles still embeded in the pillars at the side of the windows. Period indicated by adverts 1937
Main Street 70 on the right note the rectangle sign above the awning that in the photo of when Mayo was placed on Main Street there is a clear photo showing the Cockton sign and Cocktons yard is now an iconic preservation success. Mayo here is protected by railings and four gas lamps and the old cars indicate before 1940 when the railings were taken down. c 1930
Main Street 72 Fletcher 70 Ironmonger, name unsure but in about the 1950s/60s was an extension of Firns of Station Street shop. Here a parade of circus horses. c 1910

Main Street 72 Jackson & Pearson ladies clothing shop about 1900, note the tiles on the pillars at the sides of the window, they are still preserved there in 2024. This shop was later Joe Mounsey grocer who was responsible for many of the photos on this website. After Joe, it was Ian Headford electrical and is currently The Toy Shop. The tiles have been kept on the wall, thanks. c 1900
