Cockermouth History
Main Street. Number 23 is the Globe Hotel, the three storey building to the left of the clock tower.
The clock tower was built in 1895 and trees planted in 1887 and they look very new so this dates the photo.
This is many years before vehicles; the hand cart and the cart with its horse elsewhere indicate the struggles of transport in the 1890s.
Note to the right of the clock tower is a very tall building. This was the photo studio of Naimby and was built high and with all the windows facing north because in 1880s to take photographs, an emulsion had to be coated onto a large glass slide and a lot of light was required to expose the negative, which was monochrome ie black and white or sepia and white.
To make a colour version an artist would paint colour tint over the monochrome print. Perhaps here the photographer artist has created a tinted sunset. c 1890
Main Street. On the left is 17 The Black Bull pub, still offering its ale in 2025. Next to it is 21 The Children’s Society Shop. On the right is 12 Bailey printer shop, now Tony Marks hairdresser.
The snow covers the road but only horse hooves leave their mark, mainly going to or from Station Street.

Main Street in the snow. On the right is number 2, the imposing entrance was the entrance to Cockermouth’s first Savings Bank and is now Cartmell Shepherd.
The similarly imposing inverted V entrance on the left is now the entrance to Club Derwent, the ex Conservative club.
In the centre is the clock tower and beyond is Mayo. Photo taken from Cocker Bridge shows snow and children pulling their hand cart in the days before motor vehicles were common, indicated by the trail in the snow that is likely to evidence hoof marks, not tyres, and the exhaust from horses.
Photo has title Main St from Cocker Bridge April 11 1917
Main Street in about 1905.
The clock tower, locally known as “Neddy” is not in the centre of the road, and at this time the horse and cart can go either side of the clock tower. However, this is the start of the new era of changing transport types and rules of the road.
In this photo the car has to decide which side of the clock tower to drive, with the horse and cart drivers wondering about this new horseless carriage.
The clock tower became an obstruction and other photos show it was removed and a signpost put in the centre of the road, pointing ahead to Keswick and to the right up Station Street. c 1905
Main Street 35 possibly owned at this time by Wm Cairns because an advert in 1922 states H B Burns Tailor and Draper is successor to Wm Cairns.
Crowds gather for unkown reason.Note the cart, perhaps a hand cart.
The photo shows the junction of Main Street with Station Street but there is no clock tower which was built in 1895 and the new trees need guards and supports and were planted in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee; so photo is pre 1895
Main Street. Observe that number 23 is the Globe Hotel and above its roof is a taller building with lots of glass windows. This was the photo studio of Naimby and was built high and with all the windows facing north because in 1880s to take photographs, an emulsion had to be coated onto a large glass slide and a lot of light was required to expose the negative, which was monochrome ie black and white or sepia and white. To make a colour version an artist would paint colour tint over the print.
In this photo, children crowd around a chained bear that is about to perform. Note the girls with pinafores and consider the status indicated by wearing types of hat.

Sources and thanks and permissions and copyright are shown on appropriate pages and/or in the About section. If someone can prove they have sole copyright and ownership of all rights to the negative and positive prints of a photo and its digital copy, and if they then want to have their name acknowledged after providing their clear evidence of ownership of sole copyright then I will acknowledge that right. Otherwise this personal project, made at my own expense, is my voluntary, free to access website made with goodwill to the community, so that the site gives free access to our community’s historic information. For those who desire to stop some photos being seen, review your motives; some photos were given to the local history centre and have been hidden for 20 years – why? I don’t have access to them. Surely when the community give photos to a local centre for free, the photos should be available to the public to view with free access and free sharing by digital reproduction on which we can add our own descriptions on our own websites and Facebook pages and other sharing sites? Please read the acknowledgements and thanks on the About section – there are some astounding links including the National Library of Scotland’s (NLS) zoomable historic maps, and sites of rail and coal historic sites and … see About. Perhaps the links will stimulate you to do your own research for your own personal education like this site that I made for personal research and education.
