Derwent Street was known as Gas Row because the gasometer was at the top of the street. Here we see the demolition on the left to make way for new flats. The shop fron on the right is unknown. The area of the gas works is now Woodville Park housing. The shop on the right is unknown. Were these the type of the row of houses without a back yard and which required the ladies to take their washing to the communal drying ground such as Fairfield (above Sainsbury car park see other photos) c 1950

Derwent Street shown after the demolition of houses to make these commercial buildings for Lloyds Motors but later these were demolished, houses built and Lloyds Motors moved to their present site on Low Road. Also on Derwent Street were small commercial units eg Ernie Thornthwaite car repairs. This is an example of planners deciding to move commercial premises to slightly out of town and residentail buildings within town. Behind the photographer are the gas holders, gasometers, and other photos show an old garage business with a Rover outside, before demolition and construction of these commercial units. The view is towards Low Road and the river Derwent beyond. c 1960
