28 Crown Street was originally the Railway Hotel because it was nearest to the railway that ended where Lakes Home Centre is before a new branch went above Cockermouth, past the Fitz and through the new Sidings housing development. The building on the right of Lakes Hotel was the school clinic, the centre building was Dr Abraham of the Keswick climbing family, with the building nearest the Lakes Hotel before all three buildings became The Trout Hotel. c 1950

Crown Street 2 Wordsworth Hotel sign on left Sullart Street left Trout Hotel far right WW2 c 1940 p2 — Crown Street. On the right the furthest building was the Lakes Hotel, now part of the Trout Hotel. The centre tall building was Dr Abraham GP, who lived there with his surgery behind. To the right the building was the dental and health clinic where the school dentist worked. Note the bricks around the windows are WW2 protection from bomb blasts. On the left is the gable end of the Wordsworth Hotel on the corner of Sullart Street. Other photos show this being demolished to widen the road, and in its place is the Wordsworth statue pointing to Wordsworth House on the right. Low Sand Lane on right. c 1940

Crown Street 14 Kirkland Carpets 16 18 22 26 shop 28 Railway Hotel c 1970 p3 — Crown Street 14 Kirkland Carpets 16 18 22 24 all residential 26 Mrs McCartney shop then archway 28 Railway Hotel which was built when the railway terminated on Low Road, before the new railway was built on the elevated ground above Cockermouth. Kirkland Carpets had previously been Tolson’s car showroom advertising “Any make of car supplied” before the front was made into the current house front with windows and doors. c 1970

Crown Street 14 Kingfisher Inn Tolsons Garage c 1970 p3 — Crown Street Kingfisher Inn shows Tolsons Engineer & Coach Builder garage with repairs works. Beside is Tolsons Imperial Garage. Adjacent is the Kingfisher Inn. The Imperial Garage was demolished to make way for the car park for Kingfisher. The gable end with the advert was St Joseph school but was demolished and rebuilt as church rooms. Observe the door to the right of Tolsons window, the lintel has the inscription “TA 1724” This is now painted over but still observable; see Bradbury “Cockermouth in Pictures 6” page 32 for other inscriptions. c 1970
